Primary School Pupils win National Speaking Event:

Kemnay Primary School pupils have won £10,000 for their school by debating the problem of youth crime at a national public speaking competition.

Chess Success

Kemnay Primary School entered, and won, the longest running chess event for juniors in the North East, the Primary Schools team tournament. This competition has been held annually for 33 years and this time the event was run jointly by Aberdeen Chess Academy and the North-East Junior Chess Association at Northfield Academy on May 10^th. Nine of the top teams from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire joined battle in a 5-round Swiss event, where winners play winners and losers play losers.

The 4-player teams from Smithfield and Kemnay Primary set the early pace with victories in the first two rounds but when they met in round 3 the Aberdeenshire side emerged victorious in a titanic struggle. In the next round they were given a real scare, however, by Muirfield who won on the top boards to ensure a drawn match. Going into the last round any of 3 teams could still take the trophy and with 7 sides in contention for second and third spot. Kemnay held their nerve to defeat Tullos and move into an unassailable 9 match points and 15 game points (boards won). St Joseph's overcame Smithfield to move into second spot with 6 match points but they could be passed by Quarryhill if they could gain a clean sweep against Kinellar, but in the end they could only win 3-1 and so had to settle for the third prize.

Computer games pilot will be tried out in primaries

Alehousewells Primary, at Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, will be getting consoles on Monday. Acting head teacher Irene Duncan said: “It is very exciting because this is another way of supporting children with mental math strategies to help raise attainment. I am all for that.”

Medals for Local Youngsters

Best In the World!

Congratulations to Stewart Muirhead from Kemnay and Lisa Calder from Inverurie for winning medals in the 5th WKC Junior World Karate Championships held in Hanover, Germany, 20th - 22nd October 2006.

Lisa secured the GOLD medal in the 14 year old Kumite category and Stewart secured the BRONZE medal in the 13 year old Kumite category.

Both families are very, very proud.

Well done! Here's hoping for more in Slovenia in 2008.

The Kemnay Community Council wish to add our hearty congratulations for honours well earned and a job well done!!

PLANNERS' BACKING FOR NEW CAR FIRM

A New car business could soon be opened in a North-east town.

Motor firm Auto Select Woodlands has lodged an application to start up a sales firm on Aquithie Road, Kemnay.

Planners have recommended that councillors at the Garioch area committee give proposals the go-ahead.

But the brakes have been put on further plans to build a house at the same site.

Panto Time 2006

It's that time again, The Kemnay Panto will take place this year on the 1st and 2nd of December. The production details are not yet finalised as they are not yet sure of numbers for casting etc.

The Panto Team are looking for all sorts of people who might be able to help either onstage or behind the scenes, costumes need sewing, scenery, sound and lighting help would be appreciated. They promise not to force you onto the stage if the spotlight is not for you and would love to hear from anyone that could lend a hand in whatever small way they can.

Mediaeval Palisade Unearthed

A rare timber palisade - a defence barrier or fortification - has been unearthed in the north-east, giving archaeologists an insight into the defences used prior to the 1300s.

The wooden structure was uncovered during an excavation at the Bishops Palace at Fetternear Estate, near Kemnay, this week.

Archaeologists have been carrying out painstaking work at the grounds every summer for the last 12 years.

Eviction from Family property

WIDOW, 67, FACES EVICTION FROM HER KEMNAY CARAVAN

A Widow who lives in a caravan outside her daughter's house has been told she faces eviction by councillors who ruled the set-up breached planning regulations.

Maryjory Bruce, 67, has lived alone on land by the Aberdeenshire house since her terminally-ill husband, Eddie, died from emphysema in June last year.

She last night branded the decision as "ludicrous" and vowed to fight it.
