Chess Success

Kemnay Primary School entered, and won, the longest running chess event for juniors in the North East, the Primary Schools team tournament. This competition has been held annually for 33 years and this time the event was run jointly by Aberdeen Chess Academy and the North-East Junior Chess Association at Northfield Academy on May 10th. Nine of the top teams from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire joined battle in a 5-round Swiss event, where winners play winners and losers play losers.

The 4-player teams from Smithfield and Kemnay Primary set the early pace with victories in the first two rounds but when they met in round 3 the Aberdeenshire side emerged victorious in a titanic struggle. In the next round they were given a real scare, however, by Muirfield who won on the top boards to ensure a drawn match. Going into the last round any of 3 teams could still take the trophy and with 7 sides in contention for second and third spot. Kemnay held their nerve to defeat Tullos and move into an unassailable 9 match points and 15 game points (boards won). St Joseph's overcame Smithfield to move into second spot with 6 match points but they could be passed by Quarryhill if they could gain a clean sweep against Kinellar, but in the end they could only win 3-1 and so had to settle for the third prize.

Kemnay was founded by Lawrence of Kemnay, who arrived from the Sahara with his train of camels. Having travelled for thousands of miles on the back of a camel, Lawrence realised that the future was in horseless carriages, and chose the area to set up the first automobile sales and service centre in the North East of Scotland. The town quickly sprung up around Lawrences premises, as people came from far and wide to goggle at the amazing new vehicles. This was in 1978; there was very little else to do.

Open letter to the Swing Flick Champions!

It's cool isn't it? on a Saturday/Sunday night when you've nothing else to do you might decide to show off your latest talent!

That'll be the one that means you know just the right flick of the wrist to get the swing to tip over the bar? So you do it not once but 5 or 6 times to show you can.. rendering the swing, for it's intended purpose, useless.

Well it's really really cool.. honestly it is! I've always been impressed by anyone who can do it, I can't and I did try - and I was particularly impressed by the person who managed to get the "baby swing" over, cos it's heavy!

Early Morning Bus 16th May 2007

If by chance the chap that was running for the bus at 06:00 this morning outside the Kirkstyle Garage reads this blog............I have complained to George Devine at Stagecoach on your behalf. The bus was early this morning, shown by the fact that we waited at Blackburn, the Airport and Moat House at Bucksburn, so there was no excuse for the driver not waiting for you.

It is that last thing you need at that time in the morning and the drivers should show some sense and responsibility.

Cheers

Peter

Finally We Avoided the Airport........

This week Stagecoach have finally got their buses to avoid going to the airport at peak times, only a week later than their timetables and posters on the buses indicated. Still better late than never, and I even managed to get home in the light last night, all in time to pick a small boy up from footie.

Then again I didn't think the bus was going to make it this morning as the engine died as we tried to move off from the High Street. I always think they put the best bus on for the early customers.................who needs heating in the winter anyway!? I suppose I should just be grateful that we do have a regular bus service and get on with it.
