Morgans of Kemnay

I would be very grateful if anyone has any information to help me trace my ancestors.

I am particuarly interested in my great, great grandfather Archibald Morgan b.1809 d.1899 who lived at Upper Coulie and was married firstly to Jane Reid and later to Elizabeth Low with whom he had 4 and 8 children respectively.

The last record of my family living in Kemnay was in 1901 when Archibald's grandsons, Alexander(b.1871), James(b.1879) and Patrick(b.1880) were all living at Whitestones and were working at the quarry.

Thanks for the very informative website and for taking the time to read this.

Morgans of Kemnay

Here is some (unofficial) information :-

Archibald Morgan ( junior ) was born 10th August 1838, at Monymusk

He married Mary Mcgregor , 15th February, 1862, at Chapel Garioch

He died at Kemnay, in 1914

Archibald's parents were Archibald Morgan and Jane Reid

Some more history compiled from local source and about the web.

The MORGANS were a big family around Kemnay & Monymusk  and matching them to their families is quite hard, however we have a local book, written by Duncan Downie a local historian which provides valuable clues and cover the Kemnay Morgans quite well, Duncan also adds his own and his family knowledge which helps connect the Morgans in the neighbouring parish of MonyMusk (which is where this strain of Morgans originated). Duncan's books are entitled "Kemnay Parish  & its People" Part 1& 2, the local Kirkyard has an old and a new bit ;), and are available from the Aberdeen & NE Scotland Family History Society

Anyhow to your question 'your' Archibald was married twice as you say and had 4 & 9 children respectively

The names you have given  as his grandsons are not quit fitting with what I have compiled already. The family names of Alexander and Archibald are very strong and nearly every Morgan family has one or both ;) - however I've yet to come across a Patrick.

It's said that there may be some connection the the Grants of Monymusk, in that they arrived in Monymusk around 1712 and brought the Morgans with them.. this is not confirmed and seems to just be a local story which has been passed down, however it would explain the predominance of the name "Archibald" throughout the Morgan Family

Your GG.GF Archibald (B: 1809) was the son of  Archibald Morgan (B: abt.1774 - D:6 Apr 1846) & Mary Shewan (Shuan) (B: 2 APR 1781 - D: 17 Aug 1858).

He had 5 Sisters: Dorothea, Sophia, Mary, Ann, Jane
& 2 Brothers: Alexander, William

The closest match I can find for the grandchildren you mention in your original post is  that there is a James Morgan b: 1878, he is Archibalds (1809) grandson and he died in NY, USA in 1929. There are plenty of Alexanders but none born around the date you mention, closest is one born in 1866, and I have no Patrick in my records! I do however have a Peter (is that a common name switch?) b: 1879 (Kintore) which would be a grandson of your Archibald - born to Archibald (1838) and Mary McGregor) - However there are quite a few families to follow.. I'm listing the children and presuming you are only interested in the Males for the Morgan name.

Archibald's family with Jane Reid:
Alexander - b: 1835
Mary
Archibald -b: 1838
Helen

Archibald's family with Elizabeth Low (all have surname Morgan 2 names are 2 names given)
Isabella
Ann
James - b: 1850
George - b: 1852
Jessie Wood
William Mitchell - b: 1857
Elizabeth Leith
John Low - b: 1862
Alexander Low - b: 1864

that's it for now unless Duncan joins in with a local knowledge story.. also I have to say some of the girlies in this family weren't all that chaste, while they're a lot better than some familes for skeletons, there are a couple of male children with the surname Morgan which may be hiding in other marriages :)
