Voice From The Café
This has been a very busy summer for the café members.
Summer Project
The project has included trips to Stonehaven pool and beach. Tubing at Alford and a day trip to Landmark. Lots of fun was had by all. The weather was fantastic. We also had an art project in the café. The young people have created amazing pieces of art which are now proudly on display in the café.
We were lucky enough to have the café open for five weeks of the holidays.
Volunteer Group
Some of our members have been busy helping at Fetternear Estate supported by youth workers.
Dam building and cutting back rhododendrons, under the supervision of Fiona and John from the Aberdeenshire Council ranger services. The members have been taught some basic conservation skills as well as gaining satisfaction at having helped out in the community. The young people have all shown great enthusiasm throughout this project.
Ocean Youth Trust
Three young lads accompanied by a youth worker attended an open evening aboard a boat and found out the opportunities available to young people, to get the chance to experience sailing trips.
News Flash
The youth café is now supporting the Duke of Edinburgh open awards scheme and will meet the last Thursday of the month. First meeting will be on Thursday 28th September at 6.30pm. All welcome.
Duke of Edinburgh expedition group.
We are a group of five boys and one girl who are taking part in the expedition part of the bronze award. We have had a very busy summer, meeting at least once a week to take to the hills. We have been supported by Duke of Edinburgh award development worker Doug Mortimer & Donna Fairley (youth worker).
We have been taught basic navigational skills, map reading and camping skills. We have all had a great summer setting up the group and have been involved in shopping for all the equipment etc.
We are proud to be the first group to have come from the café. We also have lots of great photos of our trips and of our first camp out which happened to be very wet and cold. We are going to be doing our first aid training on the 28th and 30th of August so the whole group know basic first aid.
Health and Hygiene
Three girls are attending the Health and Hygiene course which is held at Gordon House so that they can volunteer to help out at the café.
Exciting New Term
This is going to be an exciting new term for the café. Not only is it to be the start of the Duke of Edinburgh open award scheme but the café also has a music project beginning which will give the young people the chance to learn how to play the guitar and keyboard.
We are also giving people the chance to have badminton coaching on a Monday night and there will be hip-hop dance classes beginning soon.
