Kemnay Bowling Club

Welcome to Kemnay Social and Bowling Club.

We are situated on the south side of the village next to Bogbeth Park and right next door to the tennis court and club. We have our own Clubhouse, completed in the early nineties, which has a licensed bar and function room to hold about one hundred and twenty. The old Clubhouse still stands but now accommodates the Tennis Club

History

Around the turn of the nineteenth century, a handful of local stalwarts and residents decided to turn a piece of ground, near the curling pond at that time, into a bowling green to be used by the local residents.

Not much is known about the construction or the playing surface but there must have been some drawbacks to the location which, if nothing else, must have been very wet and boggy. In any event some years later the green was relocated to its present position, constructed again by some very hardy local dignitaries. A smallish wooden hut was also built to serve as a Clubhouse and the Kemnay Bowling Club was up and running.

We have a date of around 1932 but have no documented evidence to prove it, only some very old black and white photographs one of which is shown here so if anyone out there has some local knowledge and or some documentation as to the founding of The Club we would be eternally grateful - Note: Click this link for a larger version of the image (large file may take a minute to download)

As you see by the picture The Club proved very popular and must have been used as a village meeting place. Some years on the small wooden hut was too small for the members and a larger and much grander hut was built which served as the Clubhouse until the present one was built.

From time to time there are some social events held for the members and their guests and non members are welcome to come anytime the Clubhouse is open and may play on the green for a token fee. For those interested in joining the outdoor membership fees are around £45 (reviewed yearly) and if you are of Academy age and under eighteen years of age you can join for a mere £5 (reviewed yearly). Now where else can you join a sports club for that kind of money?
